Betsy Sherrard of Louisville, Miss., said she's glad to be one of many people filling up at some of the cheapest places for gas in Meridian.

"I drove here from Louisville, and spotted the nice little gas price this morning," said Sherrard. "So on my way home I decided I would stop and fill up."

It's barely noticeable, but locals say every penny counts.

"Every little bit counts nowadays," said Berda Jack of Meridian. "Gas prices went up, your wages went down."

An online tracker of gas prices reported unleaded ranges from $3.69 to $3.99 a gallon. The Mississippi average is $3.91, down three cents from Thursday.

Just two weeks ago, a gallon of unleaded gas averaged $3.93 a gallon in Mississippi, so that's nearly 15 cents difference.

Cars were lined up waiting to pump at College Park Gas 'n Go, because it was the cheapest we found at $3.69 a gallon.

"About eight cents cheaper a gallon here than down the street and its six cents cheaper here than the Wal-Mart," said bargain hunter Richard Hill.

Triple A says the national average price of a gallon of regular is a little over $4.10. That's down nearly a penny from the all-time high set Thursday. One local says this is a gas crisis that has crept up on us.

"That's great but it should be much lower," said bargain shopper Bill Freeman.

Triple A predicts if the price of oil stays below $130 a barrel, at least for a week or two, gas prices may stay below $4.00 a gallon.

"I am a very big optimist and I believe that we will see lower gas prices coming up," said Sherrard.

In the meantime, Sherrard says we have to have keep pumping and make ends meet the best we can.
