The East Mississippi Business Development Corporation announced Tuesday that it has hired an advertising agency, North Star Destination Strategies of Nashville, Tenn., that specializes in creating logos for cities and counties.
Their message is, 'your brand is what they say about you when you're not around.' Branding is what you do about it.
CEO Don McEachern said that Meridian's new brand would attract industry, but it also would help sell employees on moving here.
"The CEOs have to go back home and tell their husband or their wife where they're moving to. It's the brand and what they understand to be special about this place. That being communication and being understood helps them do that job of selling that back to their employees," McEachern said.
EMBDC president Wade Jones said the affiliation with North Star was as a result of research done by his organization's Imaging Committee.
"In order for us to reach our potential in economic development on all these fronts, tourism, downtown revitalization, retail, industrial development, we have to be able to find our distinct differences that separate us from other communities that makes us better," Jones said.
"Why would someone elect to make an investment here over another community? And therefore we need to be able to brand ourselves to communicate that."
Jones said the EMBDC hopes the new image will be able to draw Lauderdale County, east Mississippi and west Alabama more closely together in communicating the good things happening here.
