Budget Standoff

The Mississippi House of Representatives voted Friday to uphold Gov. Ronnie Musgrove's veto of a budget bill, leaving lawmakers to search for ways to fund the $3.6 billion spending plan for the year starting July 1.

The House vote also created a political showdown with the Senate, which had refused hours earlier to accept a budget compromise agreed to by Musgrove and House leaders.

Lawmakers were hoping to end their three-month session Friday, but the budget impasse will keep the House and Senate at the Capitol at least into the weekend.
