Lott: Not Surprised by Nissan

The announced expansion of the Nissan plant in Canton before it even opened, came as no surprise to Senator Trent Lott.

He discussed the expansion on Thursday in a news conference with Mississippi media.

"We knew it was in the offing," said Lott. "In fact the truth of the matter is we knew that this was a likely prospect even during the discussion on Hyundai and that was one reason why I was concerned we pursue the Hyundai plant in a way that would also allow us to continue to be competitive for phase two at Nissan."

A special session of the Mississippi Legislature dealing with additional financing of up to $75 million for Nissan begins June 21.
