Breast Cancer Awareness Month is being observed during October. Mayor John Robert Smith issued the proclamation in Meridian.

Has someone in your immediate family ever been diagnosed with breast cancer?
Yes
No

Several events are planned throughout the month to educate the public about the importance of self-exams and mammograms. The group organizing the effort is called Careousel, a breast cancer support group.

"As a member of the group," said breast cancer survivor Sheila Joiner. "Our goal is to promote awareness and education. All the pink that you see in the city of Meridian, if we can have one woman remember to do her BSE or to get mammograms that's our mission."

The group also put pink ribbons on all the carousel horses around town.
