Third Fire Devastates Family

"I just feel numb. I don't know how I feel, said Annie Sumrall, 73, of Lauderdale. The mother and grandmother have experienced three house fires in six months.

The first happened in October 2002. Sumrall lost her home of more than 20 years. The second fire occurred in late April at her new home nearby.

And Sunday night, the unthinkable happened. A third fire left not only Sumrall, but also her daughter, Linda, her two grandchildren and one great grandchild, all homeless.

With all of the homes located just a few yards from each other, off of Green Loop Road, the three fires have left a significant mark on the community. For now the family is staying with other relatives.

The Red Cross continues to assist the family. The agency is also asking for more help to meet the needs of people touched by these emergencies.

"It's overwhelming. They really are in need of everything," said Cheri Barry, director of the American Red Cross Key Chapter in Meridian.

"Right now they need clothing, food items, bedding and couches on down the road. These are items that they will also need."

To donate to the family you may contact the Red Cross in Meridian at 485-5151 or the family directly at 679-7804.
