4 pm Update
Some areas have seen some snow, but the snow potential is quickly ending across the area.
The band of heavy snow that was moving through Newton a little earlier is quickly changing over to rain as it moves into Meridian.
The threat for black ice exists Friday morning, especially on bridges and overpasses. Black ice is a glaze of ice on roads that looks like a wet road and can send you and your car sliding. Friday morning's drive to work should be taken slowly and carefully.
11:35 am update
A heavy snow band set up across central and southern Mississippi earlier this morning as an upper level low pressure system and cold air moved into the state from the west. Dry air wrapping around the south side of the upper level low has caused much of the rain and snow that was over east Mississippi to evaporate, and we have seen conditions improve for the time being.
At this time, we do see more moist air wrapping around the upper level low, and it appears as though we will see another burst of snow a little later this afternoon as the moisture works its way over our area. To potential still exists for heavy snow in some spots. Accumulations should average around 3-5 inches, but some locations could see as much as 8 inches of snow before all is said and done.
Already more than 4 inches of snow has fallen in Hattiesburg this morning. Heavy snow fell from Hickory and Newton westward along and south of Interstate 20. Spotty snow has mixed with cold rain and sleet around Meridian, Enterprise, and Quitman.
Some light snow flurries are possible across West Alabama tonight. By that time, the upper level low will be exiting the region, so any snow will likely be light and short-lived.
Dangerous travel conditions are being reported along Interstate 20 between Newton and Jackson. If you can reschedule your travel plans, you are encouraged to do so.
