Science of Highway Safety

Drivers losing control of their vehicles and striking roadside trees has resulted in several fatalities recently.

Central District Transportation Commissioner, Dick Hall, said it's a case-by-case decision on how far off the road trees should be.

"We try to maintain a safe, efficient highway. And if it's a situation where we know it's dangerous, then obviously we're going to go out there and cut the trees," said Hall. "There's no magic number, because each spot may be different. Some may be in a curve, some may be in a straightaway. It depends on the exact situation."

Hall said there is no requirement about the distance trees should be from roadsides.
