Lauderdale County Habitat for Humanity plans to build four homes in just one week, all of which will go to Hurricane Katrina victims. The organization usually works on one house at a time.

"A building blitz is where you set a short period of time to build a home in. But ours is unique, that we are building four homes in just seven days," said executive director Fonda Rush.

The local chapter of Habitat has received a helping hand from other affiliates across the country. Early Monday morning, a truck from Helena, Montana, dropped off pre-fabricated framing for a home-to-be in Meridian.

"It helps us because it cuts down on some of our time. Also, it's building materials we don't have to buy," Rush said. "That affiliate bought the building materials and all and put the framing together."

With four houses under construction at one time, a large group of volunteers is needed.

"Our first weekend is coming along great. We have had lots of people who have called in and can work the weekend. Sunday, we still need a few volunteers," said Rush.

Construction begins Saturday. If you are interested in volunteering contact Habitat for Humanity at 601-485-4992.
