Everyday more and more people are flocking to job placement centers looking for employment. Mississippi's unemployment rate rose some in May to 6.5 percent from 6.1 percent in April.
"It has gone up a little bit since April. It is seasonal fluctuations. We see some students, but, yes, some layoffs due to manufacturing and a few in education as well," said Algene McQuarters, manager of Meridian's WIN Job Center.
Because of the large numbers of company closures and layoffs, many employment offices are seeing more and more people coming across state lines seeking work.
"We are seeing a lot of people coming in from all over the place trying to find jobs," said Shirley Gaines.
Another thing that employment agencies provide are tools such as free usage of the Internet and other resources.
"We have a lot of resources here such as free usage of computers, the Internet and phone usage," Gaines said.
