Mississippi has a toll-free phone number and website for residents to register on a "no call" list to reduce telemarketing calls.
Response was quick. As of 1:00 p.m. on July 1, 23,000 consumers had placed their numbers on the list.
"That exceeds our expectations," said central district Public Service Commissioner, Nielsen Cochran.
"I would not be a bit surprised if in the first 30 to 45 days we had in the neighborhood of 150,000 to 200,000 sign up," Cochran said. "I basically anticipate during the first six months or so about 300,000 to sign up."
More than 10 million numbers were registered on the national "no call" list the first four days it was available. It may be accessed on the Internet at www.donotcall.gov
