Children at the Boys and Girls Club in Meridian are learning some important lessons.
As part of the "alpha-care" initiative, local members of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority are teaching students about careers, professionalism and academics. One of the main topics of discussion is reading.
"Many times the children from two to three months tend to forget a lot of things," said Elinore Hersey of AKA. "So, if we focus on reading here in the summer, we felt it would help them retain some of what they learned in their regular school setting."
Each summer the local AKA chapter sponsors the four to six week “alpha-care” seminars.
