Anderson Regional Medical Center Thursday hosted screenings for potential bone marrow donors.
There is a shortage of donors, especially within the African American community.
Volunteers are added to a registry, based on information gathered from samples that are taken.
"We've found that the patient has a greater chance among their own race. There are over 5 million people on the registry, but only 380,000 are African American or Black," said Mattie Coburn, donor recruiter for the Mississippi Marrow Donor Program. "And that's not enough. So we want everybody that falls into that category to come out and help support our efforts."
You may call to get more information on how to donate at 1-800-MARROW-2. Anyone who joins the registry may remove his or her name at any time.
