A traffic stop on the interstate in Meridian Monday morning resulted in seizure of $15,000 worth of illegal drugs.
The east Mississippi drug task force was called in to work the case. Meridian police officer Chris Read and his K-9 partner discovered 15 pounds of marijuana in a hidden compartment.
"This time of year is harvest time. I'm sure you'll be seeing a lot more coming through the interstate," said EMDTF Agent Karl Merchant.
"Officer Read is doing an excellent job with the K-9 partner. He's gotten in the last several months several big hits. I know he's gotten a large amount of cocaine, a large amount of money so far. He's just doing an excellent job on the interstate."
Two suspects, Humberto Ramirez and Jose Alvara, were charged with possession with intent to distribute over a kilo of marijuana. Their bonds were set at $60,000 each.
In an unrelated case in Newton, more than $1000 worth of powdered cocaine was recently discovered during a traffic stop.
Darien Moore, 21, is charged in the case.
During the stop, officers say they also found a small amount of marijuana in Moore's possession. Aside from the drug charges, Moore also faces a charge for driving under the influence.
