Meridian schoolteachers and officials kicked off the school year Wednesday with their first educational work session.
The program focused on understanding poverty and the effect it has on students.
Jim Littlejohn, of process incorporated, conducted the workshop.
Mayor John Robert smith reminded teachers of the challenges ahead.
"We must instill in our students to take responsibility for their actions, but also to be responsible moral citizens," said Smith. "And I acknowledge that you cannot do that in one day in the classroom."
The mandatory sessions are held throughout the year and focus on the school system’s motto: "building a successful future for every child.”
