Doctor John Myrick has turned in his letter of resignation to the board.
He tells Newscenter 11 that he is retiring to spend more time with his family.
Myrick, who has served two years with the district, was elected to the position last year. his retirement will take affect Oct. 1.
The board has 90 days to appoint a new superintendent or else the state will do so.
