Democratic Primary runoffs were held Tuesday in Philadelphia, Newton, and Hickory.
In Philadelphia, former Neshoba County supervisor James Young led incumbent Mayor Rayburn Waddell by a 1,000 to 882 vote margin in unofficial numbers Tuesday. The clerk said there are about 140 absentee ballots that have not been tabulated. If his lead holds, Young would be the first black mayor of Philadelphia, because there are no other candidates running in the June 2 general election.
In Newton, insurance agency owner David Carr led incumbent Mayor Michael Pickens by a vote margin of 316 to 267. The person certified the winner faces independent candidate Robert Moore June 2.
In the town of Hickory, Billie Robinson led Lori Evans, 31 votes to 12, votes in the Democratic runoff for board of aldermen, Ward 1.
