It's back to business for the Mississippi Legislature. While lawmakers prepare to return to work, efforts are gearing up to revive a voter ID initiative.

This year a proposal on the issue died in the state Senate. Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann has kicked off a petition drive that, if successful, would lead to voter ID being placed on a statewide ballot for voters to decide.

"I've been pushing voter I.D. I think people see it as a common sense thing to do and I really think that this initiative is something that will pick up steam in the summer and that we'll be voting on it a year from now," says Hosemann.

The measure would require voters to show a government-issued photo ID before being allowed to vote. At least 90,000 signatures, spread equally from
Mississippi's four congressional districts are needed in order for the petition drive to be certified.

From now through October, Hosemann said residents can sign the petition on the Secretary of State's Web site.
