A catfish processing plant that closed this week is reopening. Southern Pride Catfish was shut down Sept. 10 because of weak market conditions.
Officials say the plant will reopen next week. That will put nearly 270 employees back to work. The plant was closed after company officials decided the move was needed to reduce inventory.
The catfish industry has been hurt by a slumping economy and by imported fish. The plant opened in 1988 as Blue Water Catfish.
Southern Pride purchased the facility to expand its operations after the plant closed in the early 1990s.
