After an emergency appeal for donations last week, officials with United Blood Services say they got a good response. However, they say more will be needed, not only now, but throughout the summer.
"We are going to keep needing more donations," said Jane Smith with the UBS. "I'm told by our technicians that by the time we get the blood processed, which usually takes about two or three days, the hospitals are ordering it. So, it is going out as quick as we get it."
The United Blood Service office in Meridian supplies blood for hospitals throughout east Mississippi and west Alabama, from Columbus to Demopolis.
The local UBS office will be open throughout the holiday weekend accepting donations.
