Clarke County officials responded to a report of attempted robbery and assault at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Wednesday night.
"It's just a tragedy that people try to come to church and worship and some yahoo wants to come disrupt the service and break into someone's car and then the man gets assaulted," said Sheriff Todd Kemp.
Kemp continued the search Thursday for a man who attempted to rob and assault a church member last night on Highway 512 between Pachuta and Quitman.
"We had some witnesses see some different individuals and some different vehicles," said Kemp. "We are looking into some leads that possibly someone picked this individual up."
Police brought in K-9 units to search the woods where the suspect fled on foot, as well as the surrounding area.
The man was described only as wearing black clothing. He is possibly linked to a string of thefts in the area.
"There have been some similar incidents in Quitman. There is a possibility they may be connected," Kemp said.
