A Mississippi Army National Guard has earned one of the state's highest honors for his actions off the battlefield.
Sgt. Dan Adams was awarded the Mississippi Commendation Medal for trying to save the lives of two people who briefly survived a head-on car collision in March.
Guard leaders said the 27-year-old Adams "heroically" tried to save the young men after the accident near Carthage.
The parents of one victim have visited Adams, saying even though their son didn't make it they are glad he didn't die alone.
Adams is a member of the 2nd Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group and is currently training at Camp Guernsey in Wyoming.
