Last Friday, the Federal Communications Commission approved a merger between two communications giants... BellSouth and AT&T. Local officials say the only effect seen by customers locally should be positive.

"This merger with AT&T and BellSouth means a continuation of convergence of technologies, the continued innovation in our industry. And it results in even greater competitive opportunities giving more solutions, more choices for the consumer and for businesses," said C.D. Smith - Regional Manager, BellSouth.

Smith says that the only difference that the average BellSouth customer will see after the merger is complete is a new logo on their bill.

"Both companies are well known for customer services and innovation, and those things will only be enhanced so locally, the customers will only reap the benefits of the convergence of both brands," said Smith.

And while the two names AT&T and BellSouth are big, there is another set of customers that will be included under the umbrella of the new AT&T.

"Cingular was a joint effort between BellSouth and SBC Corporation which acquired AT&T. In essence, Cingular will remain the same--the same owners (BellSouth and AT&T) because SBC Corporation acquired AT&T and opted to use the world renowned brand, the everlasting brand of AT&T, branding itself as the new AT&," said Smith.

As for when customers can expect to see that logo changed, Smith says that could be anytime. The merger calls for immediate implementation of the integration.
