Most of those injured in a church bus crash Sunday near Meridian have been released from the hospital. But several are still in various stages of recovery.

The one, who at this point, continues to be of most concern to medical officials and family members is Maggie Lee Henson. She is receiving care at University Medical Center in Jackson.

However, there has apparently been some progress in her case. Church officials say she was taken out of her medically-induced coma long enough to check for brain activity, and there apparently was some. This news is being celebrated by church members.

Friends and family staying with her at UMC say there have been a couple of very difficult days where they thought they were going to lose her.

Despite the positive development that Maggie is showing signs of brain activity, a family friend staying in Jackson says doctors haven't been very optimistic about her recovery.

"We had some touch and go moments where her heart stopped several times," said Gina Rees. "The doctors aren't conveying a lot of hope but we are just praying with hope. We believe it can happen."

In Shreveport Wednesday, church members said, after days of no positive news about her condition, now there's a glimmer of hope.

Two of the injured were expected to be released Wednesday, one from Rush Hospital and another from UMC. Another in Rush is supposed to be released sometime this week. That leaves two still in the hospital indefinitely, one at Rush, the other at UMC.

The church family at First Baptist Shreveport is holding on to each other and their faith in this very difficult time.

The church continues to be packed daily with people volunteering to help in any way they can, and the phone continues to ring constantly with people asking to help.

Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Greg Hunt, said he cannot believe the outpouring of support he's seen.

"We're finding every practical way we can to touch these people's lives. To love them, to reach out to them," Hunt said.

The church continues to have a "prayer wall" set up for people to come by and leave their thoughts.

Hundreds of people attended the funeral Wednesday morning for 14-year-old Brandon Ugarte, who died in the crash.
