Acting-chief justice Gorman Houston now leads the Alabama Supreme Court.
At a news conference in Montgomery, Houston said ousted justice Roy Moore owes the state $7,000 in worker overtime. He said that amount was spent to get the Ten Commandments monument removed from the judicial building.
Houston has also dismissed some personnel.
"If there is appeal, it probably will be a rather long drawn out affair, five or six months, the soonest it could possibly be," said Justice Houston, "And I just absolutely had to have some help to make sure that I had the right people down there who could work with me."
Because of state budget problems, jury trials are being cut and 400 judicial department employees are being laid off at Thanksgiving.
