Members of the Mississippi National Guard and Army Reserves stationed in Iraq and the Middle East will receive an extra gift this holiday season.
The Mississippi Economic Council has raised $15,000 to purchase prepaid calling cards. The cards can be used by National Guard members and reservists to make a free 20 minute call to their loved ones on Thanksgiving.
Because of a discount, the MEC is only paying $6.50 per card for what translates to a 20 minute call instead of the retail rate of $13.00 to $14.00 for what amounts to a 10 minute call.
The deal requires that the cards be purchased in increments of one
thousand. MEC President Blake Wilson says the prepaid cards will be distributed to those within reach.
Now the organization is gearing up to buy enough cards for Christmas.
