The project committee of the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Center has requested the Lauderdale County board of supervisors stand by its agreement to contribute $150,000 to the project, even though the city has only committed $100,000.

District 5 supervisor Ray Boswell objected at a work session Tuesday.

"I'd like to be able to vote for some of these things. Ya'll just give our money away," said Boswell. "You know you don't want me to vote for none of these things. You want to just do as you please. That's my opinion. You have your opinion."

When board president Craig Hitt said he supported the $150,000 request, Boswell interrupted.

"Before you got to be president of the board you was a pretty humble, little guy and you tried to take care of the constituents, but when you got appointed board president, your little old head (swelled up) and now you're ready to give the courthouse away," said Boswell. "That's what burns me up. You was a very humble guy till you got to be president of the board."

"On the record, I'm not ready to give the courthouse away," said Hitt, with a smile. No other member of the board spoke up in their part of the meeting.

The issue of the contribution will be decided in Monday's regular meeting.

In other business, the board also acted on a request from the city of Meridian to supply a name for the new industrial park that could paint on the water tower.

Supervisor Hank Florey suggested "Meridian I-20/59 Industrial Park". After some discussion, it was approved to call the new site "Meridian-Lauderdale County I-20/59 Industrial Park."

Board attorney Rick Barry reminded the supervisors that people who have newly turned 65 or are disabled have only until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday to file for an exemption to the garbage fee. Those who have previously filed need not file again.
