Employees from 10 local companies performed good deeds for the United Way.

Their bosses took the first step. They are what the United Way calls pacesetters, the first to donate to the new United Way campaign.

The money they raise will account for 25 percent of the total.

This year's goal is $800,000. But Friday these people gave more than just their dollars.

As part of the Day of Caring, they're doing odd jobs for United Way agencies. At the Boys and Girls Club, it was painting. At the Wesley House, it was sprucing up playground equipment.

For these community programs, help from the United Way is the difference between life and death.

The United Way's full fundraising effort will begin in September.
