The Joint Committee on Performance Evaluation and Expenditure Review also known as PEER has received a complaint that alleges an unnamed board member of the Health Department "bought his seat".
The complaint asked PEER to investigate "conflicts of interest, deception and lack of attention to health protection on the part of the board and the department."
Some board members own or oversee the health facilities they regulate.
The new 10-member PEER board will be appointed in January by Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck and the incoming Speaker of the House. Lee Ann Mayo, spokeswoman for Governor Ronnie Musgrove, said board members were selected for their credentials, not for contributions.
PEER is already reviewing the department’s alleged deficiencies in enforcing its environmental health regulations, particularly wastewater disposal.
