Philanthropist and education advocate Sally Barksdale died Monday following a months-long battle with cancer.
Barksdale and her husband invested $100 million of their own money to bolster public school reading in Mississippi.
Barksdale, 60, was the wife of Jim Barksdale, the past president and chief executive officer of California-based Netscape Communications Corporation.
The Barksdale's are both graduates of the University of Mississippi. They donated the money in 2000 to create The Barksdale Reading Institute at the university in Oxford.
Sally Barksdale's nephew, D. Allan Mitchell, said she believed strongly in education equity. In his words, "She was a marvelous, caring person.''
A memorial service will be held Thursday at Saint James Episcopal Church in Jackson.
