The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians will be among several tribes to share about $1 million in federal stimulus money to purchase equipment and improve facilities used to provide food assistance to low-income families.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack made the announcement Wednesday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture says about 100,000 individuals receive a monthly food package through the Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations.

The money is the first in a series of recovery act allocations totaling $5 million in stimulus funding.

Benefits under the program go to 271 tribes through 98 Indian Tribal Organizations and five state agencies.
