As millions of Americans were settling in to enjoy the Super Bowl Sunday, some Meridian residents were forced to leave their homes. Shortly after five, a fire ripped through an apartment building at Northwood Place.
Paris and Allen Rattler moved into their apartment just a few weeks ago. Now, the siblings will be looking for somewhere else to live after a fire destroyed their apartment and 11 others at Northwood Place.
The fire marks the end of a trying month for the Rattlers'. On January 5th in the Blackwater community of Kemper County, the trailer they were sleeping in was picked up off of its foundation and thrown into the woods. Their mother, Mary Rattler, remains in a Jackson hospital.
Chief Homan says fire crews will remain at the apartment complex through the night. The origin of the blaze is under investigation, but Homan says some residents saw a barbeque grill on a balcony flaring up before the building caught on fire. Firefighters were not able to search the top floor, but no one was believed to be injured or killed in the fire.
