Barbour: Mississippi Development Authority Must Protect Bases

Gov. Haley Barbour wants the Mississippi Development Authority to oversee efforts to help the state's military bases survive the upcoming round of closing.

Former Governor Ronnie Musgrove's MDA got bumped out last year by state lawmakers. That came after the economic development agency fired longtime base-saving lobbyist Barry Rhoads.

Community Leaders persuaded the Legislature to bypass MDA and shift the money ad duties to the state College Board to rehire Rhoads.

He works for the state and local governments to prepare for the 2005 base-closure round ordered by Congress. Barbour has expressed strong support for Rhoads.
