Stronger Seat Belt Law Sought

Many officials are calling on Mississippi legislators to enact a primary seat belt law.

It would allow officers to pull over drivers simply for not wearing seat belts.

"Statistically, in states that there is a primary seat belt law, the incidence is reduced. If we had a primary seat belt law we would better serve our community," said Maj. Ward Calhoun.

Currently, an officer must have another reason for stopping someone, such as speeding or having a broken taillight.
