Construction on a new hospital in Newton is expected to begin this summer. So far, hospital officials say they have raised almost $150,000 toward the effort.
The rest will be paid for through a $6.5 million loan. Unlike the current facility, hospital officials say the new one will have 30 beds instead of 49.
"You know our census here averages a lot less and those beds were built back in the 50's when there were a lot of other patients admitted. A lot of things are done on an out patient bases now. We have very few inpatient surgeries now and when you're averaging bout 10 to 12 acute care patients there's just no validation to have 49 beds," said Tim Thomas.
Bids for the new hospital are expected to begin in May, followed by construction in June or July.
