Harpole Appeals to High Court

A defeated candidate for sheriff in Kemper County Monday filed a notice of appeal to the Mississippi Supreme Court.

Johnny Harpole had originally challenged his loss in the democratic primary to the Kemper County democratic executive committee and in Kemper County Circuit Court.

Harpole lost the primary to incumbent sheriff Sam Tisdale by roughly 159 votes. Tisdale went on to win the general election in November 2003.

Harpole contended that there were discrepancies in absentee ballots, that felons voted illegally and that votes were cast for deceased voters.

In December 2003, special circuit judge Albert Smith found no merit in Harpole's claims and dismissed the case with prejudice.
