Amtrak Gets Needed Funds

Updated: Fri 6:17 PM, Jul 19, 2002

Amtrak will keep running, and it will get more money than it expected to do it, if the President approves a Congressional appropriations bill.

House and Senate conferees Thursday night approved the bill. Majorities in both chambers support it. The $205 million is more than the $170 million in loans proposed by the Bush Administration, and it won't have to be paid back.

Meridian Mayor John Robert Smith, who is also Chairman of the Amtrak Board of Directors, says he's pleased with the news, and expects the President will approve it.

Amtrak's Crescent Line runs through Meridian.
