Mississippi Congressman Chip Pickering has been named vice-chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Pickering has served on the committee since 1998.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee has oversight over legislation in the areas of telecommunications, consumer protection, food and drug safety, public health, Medicare, air quality and environmental health.
Congressman Joe Barton, a Republican from Texas, succeeds Congressman Billy Tauzin of Louisiana, as chairman. Tauzin stepped down in February.
Barton announced Pickering's new position Thursday. Pickering said his job would be to move the committee's agenda forward by creating and passing good legislation.
