At about 4:00 p.m., an 18-wheeler truck struck a bridge in the westbound lanes on the interstate in Meridian. The rig was hauling a load of tires that caught fire on impact.
Several units from the Meridian Fire Department spent approximately half an hour extinguishing the flames.
The driver was able to escape the cab and was taken to the hospital with injuries that officials said did not appear to be life threatening.
"I saw him trying to crawl out and he was able to get out of the vehicle," said one witness.
The mishap interrupted interstate travel for hours. Traffic was rerouted to the Hwy. 45 bypass.
Many travelers were stranded till the area could be cleared.
"I am just trying to get home, but thank God the driver is okay," said one driver.
Meridian police are investigating the cause.
