A special enforcement program started by the Meridian Police Department about a year ago has apparently produced results.
According to K-9 handler, officer Chris Read, over 3800 Pounds of marijuana and almost 500 pounds of cocaine were seized by the MPD alone in the year 2003.
"We try to deter people from committing violations and cutting down on accidents and stuff. Our statistics on accidents and fatalities have dropped tremendously since we started this program on the interstate. So that's been successful," said Read.
Read said officials believe the illegal trafficking originates in the southwest United States.
