The state College Board has asked the attorney general to monitor proceedings associated with University of Southern Mississippi President Shelby Thames' decision to fire two tenured professors.

Board members went behind closed doors Thursday on the final day of its monthly meeting.

Thames' decision earlier this month to seek the dismissals of sociology professor Frank Glamser and English professor Gary Stringer prompted protests at the Hattiesburg school and a no-confidence vote last week by the USM Faculty Senate.

At least three other faculty senates, including those at Mississippi State University and Millsaps College, have passed resolutions expressing concern with Thames' decision.

The President's Council, which held its monthly meeting Wednesday, went into a closed session and asked reporters to leave while it was briefed on the USM situation.
