Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said a passenger train left from Chicago Thursday night and is slated for central Mississippi sometime Friday. He said another passenger train would leave from New Orleans sometime Friday.

The City of New Orleans runs from New Orleans to Chicago and back with a stop in Jackson.

When Amtrak's City of New Orleans train spilled down an embankment in a swampy area just shy of the Big Black River, it was traveling a stretch of Canadian-owned track with a rough history.

Four freight trains, including on carrying toxic chemicals, derailed on that area 25 miles north of Jackson since 1994.

The track's owner, CN Railway Company, said the rails were inspected just two days before the Tuesday wreck.

Spokesman Ian Thomson said two freight trains rode the track the afternoon preceding Amtrak's derailment. The investigation continues.
