Mississippi is experiencing its highest fire danger since the drought of 1999-2001. March is shaping up to be the driest in history.
The Meridian Fire Department is strongly urging the public to discontinue burning.
"We are telling people to stop burning and we will not be issuing any burn permits until this condition improves. The burn permits that have already been issued are still valid but all burning should be supervised," says Kelly Hannah, a Meridian Fire Prevention Specialist.
Little rain is forecast at least through the first half of April.
