Body Discovered Along River

A body was discovered around 1 p.m. Sunday in Wayne County, about two miles from the Clarke County line, along the banks of the Chickasawhay River. A fisherman reported it.

Investigators say the deceased has been identified as 66-year-old S.T. Alfred from Hattiesburg. They say he was first reported missing in December of 2006. An investigation is now underway into his exact cause of death.

"We think that there's foul play and also the Hattiesburg Police Department is under that assumption and that the body was placed in the Chickasawhay, north of Wayne County," said Wayne County Sheriff John S. Farrior. "In another county is where the body was thrown in the river, is what we think."

Farrior said autopsy results could be available by Friday.

Meanwhile, investigators say they believe Alfred knew the person or persons responsible for his death.

Authorities are now looking for Alfred's car. It was a 1996 navy blue Buick Roadmaster.

Anyone with information on where the car can be found is asked to contact the Wayne County Sheriff's Department at (601)-735-3801.
