The chairman of the Alabama House General Fund budget committee, John Knight, said he hopes to get votes on bills to increase the nursing home bed tax, increase the cigarette tax, and raise fees for a variety of court cases.
But Knight added he's not hopeful. He says there is strong opposition to any kind of revenue-raising measure in the House, even those proposed by the governor.
Knight's committee plans to start working on the state General Fund budget Wednesday. He says the events in the House Tuesday will determine whether that budget has dramatic cuts to many state programs.
