Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie Friday praised the work of his deputies who concentrate on DUI enforcement.
Sgt. David Rosenbaum and Deputy Mike McCarra wrote a combined 426 DUI citations during 2003.
They and other officers were honored at the annual officer appreciation awards luncheon in Jackson.
At a news conference, Sheriff Sollie said crashes caused by someone drinking and driving cause more deaths than guns and knives.
Corporal Donald Jenkins and Officer Joseph Moulds of the Meridian Police Department, Kemper County Deputy Reginald Spencer and State Trooper Broderick Hutchins of Troop-H were also recognized for their efforts to get drunk drivers off the road.
Deputy George Elliott of the Madison County Sheriff's Department was the "top" DUI ticket writer, with more than 600.
