well hope the book is tossed at them to start with... as far as cops needed and affidavit from the school.. any time you have something like this you have to have one as to saying yes they belong to another party. be it bus.. or even your car.. even if the law was there seeing it happen called paperwork you need to prove they were not to have or drive what they are caught with other wise there is no charge if you can't prove they didn't own it or had rights to it.

It's obvious the kids were not trying to steal the buses. I'm amazed at how a childish prank gets so much attention and the real problems in this city go unnoticed. Children must be writing these comments, because every parent knows that teenagers don't always think about the consequences of their actions until it's too late. I pity the poor soul who believes their children will never make a mistake. You may have to eat those words and carry a heavy heart one day. The school system needs to accept responsibility for leaving the keys in the buses and extending the opportunity in the first place.

When you get your property tax bill come January, note that education gets the lion's share of those taxes. So, thank hooligans for their vandalizing of school property to help make that lion's share "bite" greater, make property taxes go higher. Insurance may pay for that damage, but with so much of it going on, insurance is going up. Which adds to the property tax cost of running the schools.

Everybody makes mistakes! You learn form them and try not to make them again! These guys are paying for the damages done to the bus! They have been publicly humiliated by the news and the paper, what more do you want! It seems harsh to me that people are ok with them facing 15 years in jail over a prank and having a felony on their record for the rest of the life! Ones not even out of high school yet! Im not saying the prank was ok or that they shouldnt be punished im simply saying jail time and a felony ...WOW!

So a crimestopper tip solved this, and the school system has to sign the affidavit? What are the cops now, scriveners? If the cops have enough to make an arrest, why do they make the school system sign the affidavits? I guess then if things go south, they can blame it on someone else. It is time for a new sheriff.

Doesn't it seem strange that there are no racial comments on this story since these young men are Caucasian? I wonder why... Stealing is stealing and they should not have stolen the bus! Yes, they should be prosecuted.

To the person saying that kids back in the 90s weren't charge for similar things: That was then, this is now. You might want to grow up and realize that this kind of thing is illegal. I'm glad someone with the LCSD did and that action is being taken against these kids. As a tax payer, I appreciate that these kids are being charged and held accountable for wasting OUR money. Maybe you don't realize but those taxes they hold out of your paycheck is used to pay for things such as school buses. Guess what: It takes more tax money to fix the buses or other damaged property. Way to go school administration and law enforcement!

Something has to be done.... What are we telling our children..... That they can go out and destroy stuff and it is okay.. Kids need to be taught to take responsibility for their action, no matter what their last name is... I am sorry a prank is letting the air out of the bus tire not stealing the bus and take it down the road for a joy ride...

To the first poster that believes the acts to have been harmless pranks: You are an idiot and have the very attitude that enables kids to commit crimes without fear of real punishment at home. I hope you do not have kids. If so, they will probably end up in jail as you cry on TV about how unfairly they have been treated.

Its about time ---that Lauderdale County took vandalism seriously!! Tax payers are tired of this. Teach kids to respect other properties. Stealing is a crime and in doing this so called "harmless prank" someone could have been seriously hurt. And it could have been those who stole the bus. Im sorry for the families involved. It is a very unfortunate situation. Hopefully, they will learn from this error and realize that we do have consequences for our our mistakes.

It’s sad , We as a nation have let the wisdom of the bible fall by the way side. Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. I thank God that my Father instilled correction on me. Now we call stealing a prank, my God help us all.

You mean to tell me you guys think this is harmless. We're talking thousand of dollars and you think it's ok??? There is a big difference between harmless prank and what they done. So your saying in the county school you guys did a lot of vandalism and didn't get in trouble for that?? Because here in the city we had some vandalism this summer with the school being set to fire and believe me those kids got what they deserved which to me is no different than what yall did..So no I totally disagree with all your comments...

These are not "kids". They are 18 years old. Old enough to vote, serve in the military, and be responsible for their actions. A prank is something that is funny and not damaging to life or property. Rolling a yard is a prank. Stealing a bus, knocking down a fence, damaging said bus, and abandoning the property by the side of the road is definitely not a prank. Thank goodness the school system has decided to give these young adults their final lesson--personal responsibility. The buses are county property. The school is a county entity. When you steal and/or destroy county property you should expect to be prosecuted. To quote a previous poster "these school pranks have went on for years and will continue to happen." This is true, but they don't have to keep escalating. By putting a stop to felonious and/or dangerous actions, we keep the students safe. "This is the way we've always done it" is the refrain of the ignorant. It's time for change.

I agree absolutely that the law should be applied evenly. Maybe someone woke up at the school system and said finally that they have to get tough. They should always have been tough, but they have to start somewhere. The crimes keep getting bigger and bigger. I wouldn't call stealing and damaging a school bus and mowing down a fence harmless pranks.

since when do schools press charges on kids for pranks? and would these same actions be taken had it been a teachers kid that pulled the prank? i understand that they broke the law but it has happened year after year! clarkdale seniors have stolen public propety two years in a row! they were not prosecuted. when i went to wl in the late 90s a group of guys in m grade did several thousand dollars worth of damage vandalizing the school and they were not prosecuted? what gives? this has really been blown out or proportion if u ask me... the school board and lauderdale county need to think long and hard about the facts and that this careless prank that hurt no one could ruin these two kids lives...yes they did it but a felony seems harsh... they could pay back the money and do some type of community service. these school pranks have went on for years and will continue to happen. what goes for one should go for all. and it shouldnt matter what ur last name is or who ur momma and daddy are. |

To Josh's cousin: I have teenagers, and if my child did this so called "Prank", I would expect my child to pay the price for his actions. They went on school grounds and stole a bus which is a Felony. That is the law, then they knocked down mailboxes, which again is a Felony. I pray for these families. My heart goes out to the parents. The laws are made for a reason. The Bible says that "thou shalt not steal." Again my heart goes out to the parents, not the young men who commited the crime. Now is the time they need to stand up and take their punishment like men. If they are of legal age, which one is still in school, then they need to be charged like an adult. May God help us all in this matter.
Prank--frim the dictionary--frolicsome trick or escapade. These young men are guilty of a crime. They acted as a kid, without the maturity of an adult even being of age, they acted without thought. That should not be an excuse not to charge them with a felony. Maybe we should ask the Courts to put them in the Military to do their time. They use to do that years ago, maybe they should start it up again. Let the Military kick their butts a little. Might help them to grow up. I feel sad for their parents, who have had to deal with the embarrassement from their children. May God help them all in this situation. I don't think this situation has affected these young men as much as alot of you think. Just watch how they treat the people who love them (Parents). If the Military won't take them, then Jail should be the next best thing for a felon.
They did the crime, now they do the time. Prank or not, they broke the law. White, black, or red, they need to come up with some green and pay for what they have done. Then they need a minimum of six months in jail. They should be charged with being stupid!
Give me a Break!!!! They are 18, committed a crime and now need to pay. It doesn't matter how sweet they are. What is next: I could rob a bank and if I get caught yell - SURPRISE, Got cha! it was all just a prank! I don't think so. Get over it, they shouldn't have gotten caught or should figure out how to pull pranks that are not going to land them in jail.
NO ONE is saying that what was done was ok. what is being said is that a felony and jail time is too harsh for what was done. all of you people saying throw the book, prosecute them, put them in jail, calling them punks, vandals, hooligens, talking about their parents, and calling other posters idiots better hope that you dont have teenagers or kids for that matter b/c kids do dumb stuff and dont think about what they are doing. if your kid has never gotten in any trouble, you need to be thankful that by the grace of god they havent. and you need to pray and hope they dont, because i dont care what anyone says if it was "your" kid, nephew, cousin, brother, uncle, daddy etc., i am quite sure you would think a felony was too harsh too! we all have made mistakes and our kids are going to make mistakes too. we may need to be careful not to judge these kids or their parents and remember that at any time it could be "your" kid.
to the alumni... actually the boys didnt have to be charged at all!!! that was a decision voted on by the school board. makes you wonder if this had been 2 other kids all together if the same vote would have been made. i doubt it.

I think both boys should go to jail. They need to learn a lesson. That would be like someone messing up your car..wouldn't you want them to pay. A prank? I say no. A prank would be more suitable for rolling. Not stealing a bus and knocking things over. They and may other people could have been hurt. They need to do community service and pay for what they have done. Humilliated? No I doubt. One of them can't be to embarrased. He's acting like a big dog. Boy shut your mouth and grow up. I'm so glad I was raised differently. Parents need to get a firm grip or should have had a firm grip on their kids. I believe it doesn't matter if it was a prank or not. Fair is Fair. Justice should be given out consistently and swiftly across the board. Shouldn't matter your race, gender or your last name.

Because of their age these guys had to be charged as adults. Luckily this is the case, normally the broken juvenile system gets ahold of the case and after a slap on the wrist these delinquents are out victimizing the public again. These boys will get probation and as long as they don't screw up they have a chance not to have a criminal record. It's called the Florida statute, just ask Ray Boswell, your record can be clean too! If they want to live a life of crime their probation will be violated and they will have to do real "ADULT" time. This is NOT the end of the road for these boys, lets hope that this incident scares them straight.
oh boy.. a child 14 and under doesn't think of the out come... is why you cant get a drivers linc. until you are 16 because near that age you have the ability to use forethought in your actions... theses are not children they are adults in all aspects of the word. now a prank is that a joke played on another that will not cause harm or grief ....
