Friday was a difficult day at the East Central Community College campus for students and faculty who knew Whitley Fisher of Lake.

Fisher was well-thought of at EC and her loss hit people hard. She is described as a bubbly, cheerful person by those who knew her.

Some say she had been babysitting and was on her way to a night class at East Central when she died after losing control of her car and crashed Thursday evening.

"It's always tragic when something like this happens on a college campus," said ECCC president Dr. Phil Sutphin. "Being the middle of the semester, the students are here, the faculty are here. Everyone who knew her is upset."

A memorial program was held for Whitley at East Central Friday morning. She was a sophomore and a member of East Central's concert choir. She was a graduate of Newton County High School. She was on track to graduate from East Central next spring.

Jordan Gunn has known her since middle school.

"There's no word or statement I could make that could come close to complimenting how much she was worth to me and to everyone else," Gunn said. "She was just an amazing person, and on the bright side I am blessed to have gotten to know her and I wish everyone could have gotten to know her."

The car crash happened at a drop-off along Decatur-Conehatta Road. Some of her friends visit the crash site, which is very near the location where Newton County High School student William Windham crashed into a bus and was killed a few years ago.

I had the privilege of getting to know Whitley last year in a night class that we had together. She was a very down to earth girl and always had a smile on her face. She was a very pretty girl and was loved by everyone. She will be missed by all that knew her, but is in a better place. Rest in Peace Whitley.

Whitley was such a sweet person. She would have done anything for anyone who needed help. I will miss her bright smile. I am praying for the family.

I have only known Whitley for a few years, but in the time that I did get to know her, she was such a blessing. She never stopped smiling...even if she was aggravated with someone. On her facebook page she has the quote, "Its not about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain." This is exactly what Whitley would have wanted everyone to know. She is in a much better place, however, she will be extremely missed by everyone who ever met her.
