Pay Raise Goes to Barbour

The bill is now on its way to Gov. Haley Barbour. It gives 20-percent raises to several officials, from sheriffs to tax assessors and collectors to supervisors. The raises would take effect Oct. 1.

Supporters say the raises are overdue. But opponents say some counties could be forced to raise property taxes to come up with the money.

If Barbour signs the bill, the raises for most county officials would be mandatory.

Supervisors would have to vote to accept their own salary increases. The supervisors could accept all or part of the 20-percent raise.

The governor hasn't taken a public stand on the bill.
