Faculty leaders at the University of Alabama have approved a resolution that apologizes for antebellum slavery at the institution.

The resolution passed and is believed to be the first of its kind in the nation.

"I think this apology represents a symbolic break with the past. It tells African-American students and white students too that we reject those ideas," said Al Brophy, who authored the resolution.

Brophy has documented slavery occurrences at the University during the antebellum period.

One faculty member voted no on the issue, saying it admitted wrong doing and invited incrimination.
